"The
dancers body is simply the
luminous manifestation of their soul. This is the truly creative
dancer, natural but not imitative, speaking in movement out of self and
out of something greater than all selves"

Advanced
Tango Musicality at Bramshaw with Steve Morrall
The
classes are open to
all levels except beginners. The content is all about moving simply
with complex musicality.
Don't be fooled by the title of Advanced Musicality. The movement I
apply to these workshops is based on simple, fundamental technique, but
I also show dancers how to move simply with lots of musical detail. It
is the musicality that is advanced. I work with
the dancers in the same way I would work with an
ensemble of musicians to encourage them to play harmoniously and
synchronously.
The longer people have been dancing, the harder it is to undo habitual
movement, so less experienced dancers (from 1 year +) will have an
advantage over more experienced dancers.

Feedback from participants:

"I love the
format of these classes. Even though I've
been dancing with a musician all these years - I'm still learning. It's
making me think about how I'm dancing instead of just "feeling" the
music. It also makes me appreciate how much a musical leader puts into
the dance and why it's so wonderful. Great stuff! Anyone who hasn't
been yet doesn't know what a gem they are missing."
Debbie Morrall, Tango UK
"I have attended every musicality class
since inception, in
truth I remember asking Steve & Debbie to include them as I
could
not attend Steve's classes at the Mango.
Learning
moves is all
very well but, for me with a technical leaning more than artistic I
felt I was swimming in fog when I danced. I was often (still
am)
late with the move/step in relation to the phrasing in the music and
could not guestimate where the music would go next.
Steve's
classes are
clearing the fog and although not "perfick" my understanding
of
the musicians and their tango music is improving with every class.
I
have always thought the
"titles" followers and leaders was inaccurate, Steve is promoting the
50/50 [collaborative] dance; I agree; the conversation can only get
better. C'mon girls, bring it
on!!!"

"I have felt
inspired and enlivened by your sessions
and excited by the potential they have to improve my tango. As a
follower the idea of the dance being a collaboration makes it much more
interesting and fun and also more of a shared experience, which gives
more connection with your partner. It is also developing my own
skills."

"There
are three things that particularly strike me
about these workshops:
- the teaching format
is truely excellent, and
so ideal for somebody like me who has never been taught how to
interpret music. Steve is very patient (thankfully!) and uses a
projector to help reinforce visually what he is teaching alongside
hearing the music.
- As a musician and a
dancer, Steve has the
capacity to convey simply how to interpret different pieces of music
and integrate them into our dancing, this is starting to help me have
another dimension in how I listen to tango music and intepret it more
respectfully.
- The enthusiam and
passion that Steve has for
teaching musicality is contagious, and has helped me have the
confidence to 'play' within the dance and be an instrumental part of
the creative process with my partner. What's more... I don't need to
take a partner to this class - so easy to drop in!
