We teach Argentine Tango as a dance made up
of
five basic moves.
All of our teaching
curriculum is based on the Gustavo Naveira/Fabian Salas school of
thought that the
dance
is based on five fundamental moves. It is neither a process of leading
and
following nor about memorising
patterns of choreography.
We teach that tango, in its purest
form, is an
improvisational dance shared by two people through a process of
invitation and response, using a non-verbal language that creates
five basic
movements. The man and the woman are equally involved in the creative
process of adding musical significance to the five moves through
dynamics, personality and expression.
Each of the five moves has a starting and ending position of one
standing leg, one free (dancing) leg, and are:
Using the free leg:
(1) Linear
side step;
(2) Linear forward step;
(3) Linear back step;
Using the standing leg:
(4)
Rotation preceding a forward step;
(5) Rotation preceding a backward step.
The five moves are accessible from either standing leg (left/right),
and it is possible to dance any one of the five moves while your
partner dances another, making a basic dance vocabulary of 5x5 moves.
The most complex Argentine tango can be traced back to the basic
structure of one of these five moves. At Tango UK, we teach the
'language' of invitation and response for each of these moves. We guide
and encourage dancers to use this non-verbal communication, from their
first hesitant 'words' to fluent
conversation that flows back and forth between the man and the
woman.
Like any language, it requires a
student to practice in order to become fluent and eloquent. Each
dancer, once achieving fluency in the five moves of tango can express
meaning, emotion and imagination and innovation through collaborative
movement. These qualities, in any language, elevate simple
communication to an art form.
